HIGH PARK CLUB SUNDAY OPEN RULES

 

1. PREFACE:

The Sunday Open Section (the Section) and the High Park Club (the Club) rely on all members of the Section to act within the spirit as well as the letter of these rules.  The Sunday Open Committee (the Committee) prefers not to act as arbiters and asks that all teams and members always conduct themselves with a constructive spirit of sportsmanship.

 

2. OCA RULES:

The current rules of the Ontario Curling Association apply to all matches, with exceptions as noted in the rules that follow.

 

3. TEAM COMPOSITION:

Each team must meet the following criteria to be eligible to play in the Section:

a. The team must have signed up according to the posted rules of the Club Signup Procedures;

b. Each team will consist of four, five or six players.  As per Club policy, any fifth or sixth members will be assessed full section fees and prize funds;

c. A player’s eligibility depends on:

i. notification to the Drawmaster;

ii. publication of the player’s name on the league’s team lists;

iii. invoice and payment of all applicable Club and Section fees;

iv. status of ‘Member in Good Standing’ as per Club policy.

Note: It is the team’s responsibility to ensure the player’s name is correctly recorded and published.

Note: Regarding signup status, it is the player’s responsibility to ensure that they are in Good Standing according to the Club’s records. Errors or omissions in the Club’s records will not be considered as it is the player’s responsibility to notify the Club of errors and omissions related to section fees.

d. A team must have at least at least three players, including one male player and one female player, and two registered members, to be eligible to play a game;

e. To be eligible for the playoffs, a player must have been a registered member of a team before the beginning of the final series of the season.

 

4. SPARES:

Sunday Open players are encouraged to follow the spirit of fair play by trying to maintain the competitive level of their team when looking for spares.

In order to provide flexibility when a substitute player is needed there are no formal requirements on finding a spare, subject to consideration by the Committee if needed.  When seeking a spare:

a. attempt to find front-end players to spare for front-ends and back-end players for back-ends; and,

b. attempt to find a spare from within the Section first, followed by the Section's spare list in the Draw Room, before looking for spares from other sections.

If there is a potential concern that the selection of a spare that may significantly change the competitive level of a team please discuss with your opponent.  Unresolved concerns can be brought forward to the Committee.

Players and spares are also reminded of the need to follow the Club’s Sparing Policy.

 

5. GAME LENGTH:

a. All regular-season games shall be a maximum of eight ends, subject to Section 5. Game Scheduling.

b. A time limit is in effect for both draws:

c. No more than two ends may be completed after the 1:41 mark in each draw. That is, if the last rock of the 6th end is released before the clock reads 6:41 p.m. (early draw) and 8:56 p.m. (late draw), then the 7th and 8th ends may be played.  If the 6th end is still in progress (i.e. the last rock of the end has not been released) when the clock reads 6:41 p.m. (early draw) and 8:56 p.m. (late draw), only the 6th and 7th ends may be completed.

d. The Committee may decide to extend the finish time for Game Scheduling (Rule 4.b.) for up to 10 minutes beyond the normal start time because of, for example, a delay in ice preparation or extreme weather that causes a significant number of games to start late.  A decision to extend the schedule will be made prior to the start of games; it will apply to all teams playing that draw;

e. No time-outs are permitted.

f. Ties will not be broken.

 

5. GAME SCHEDULING:

a. Unless otherwise posted or communicated, regular season games are scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. on the day of play. The digital clock on the east wall of the rink will be the official timepiece. Games are to be played at their scheduled time, subject to the following:

i. If one team is not eligible to begin to play its scheduled game within ten minutes after the scheduled start time (i.e. by 5:00 p.m. or 7:15 p.m.), the team will forfeit one point, one end, and the hammer.  At the end of the next ten minutes, the team will forfeit another point, another end, and the hammer.

a. Where the ice is not ready by 5:00 p.m. or 7:15 p.m., the penalty will apply if a team is unable to proceed as soon as the ice is ready.

b. After a delay of twenty-five minutes from the scheduled start time, the offending team forfeits the game by default.

b. If both skips agree, games may be rescheduled, subject to ice availability.  Rescheduled games must be played before the last night of the series.  If the match is not played, the team requesting to reschedule forfeits the match by default.

c. If  a  team (or both teams) is (are) unable to reschedule a game as a result of participating in a CCA, OCA or TCA event, or other extenuating circumstance occurring on a game night, the offending team(s) will forfeit the game.  However, the offending team(s) will be awarded a Loss, rather than a Default Loss and an Aggregate Points Deduction for the default will not be assessed.

 

6. SCORING:

Teams are awarded points for the results of each game.  At the end of each series, as determined by the Drawmaster, standings will determine series promotion and demotion, points awarded to teams for the Aggregate Championship, and playoff participation.  Scoring is as follows:

a. At the end of each game, the winning third (or one of the thirds in case of a tie) shall record the result of the game on the score sheets provided in the draw room.

i. Each team’s record of play must be recorded on the draw score sheet before the end of the last game of each series.
ii. For games where a result is not recorded by the end of the last game of each series, each team will be awarded a loss.
iii. Each team is responsible for checking the results of their games to ensure accuracy.
iv. The results of games as recorded on the draw score sheet will be taken as final and will not be adjusted after the end of the series.

b. The scoring system for Sunday Open will be as follows:

    • Win = 2 Points
    • Tie = 1 Point
    • Loss = 0 Points
    • Default Loss = -1 Point

c. The following bonus points being allotted by flight division at the end of each series:

    • A = +6 Points
    • B = +4 Points
    • C = +2 Points
    • D = 0 Points

d. Tiebreaking – Regular Season: When series points are equal, tiebreakers will determine rankings and possible movements between flights.  At the completion of each individual series, if a tiebreaker is necessary, the following criteria are used in the order presented:

i. the win-loss record of head-to-head games among the tied teams in that series;

ii. the lowest distance in the series shootout (Rule 6.h.);

iii. a coin toss by the Drawmaster

e. The team with the highest total aggregate points for the season will be declared the Sunday Open Aggregate Champion.

f. Tiebreaking – Playoff Ranking / Aggregate Champion: When the regular season ending aggregate points are equal between two or more teams a tiebreaker will determine single Aggregate Points Winner according to the following criteria:

i. the win-loss record of head-to-head games between the tied teams;

ii. the higher cumulative bonus points accumulated (Rule 6.c.);

iii. the higher total number of regular season wins;

iv. the lowest cumulative shootout distance (Rule 6.g.);

v. a coin toss by the Drawmaster

g. Shootout:

i. Each team will throw, measure, and record (in centimetres) a one-rock shootout per series;

ii. The shootout must be thrown after one of the team’s scheduled games;

iii. The shootout must be completed by a registered team member who played in the game immediately preceding the shootout;

iv. The player throwing the shootout may not practice; sweeping is permitted;

v. The distance from the pin (in centimetres) must be accurately recorded on the draw sheet immediately following the shootout;

vi. An attempted shootout that does not stop in the rings shall be assessed a distance or 184 cm; an unattempted shootout shall be assessed a distance of 185 cm.

 

7. INTERPRETATIONS OF THE RULES:

In the case of disagreement between skips over fouls, forfeitures or questions of interpretation of these rules, the skip who wishes a ruling must contact a committee member at the time of the incident, or as soon as practical after that incident.  The committee should make the decision as soon as possible after discussing the situation with the other skip involved.
